Mindful Art

A combination of mindfulness and art

Creating art is a wonderful way to practice mindfulness. Many people believe that to practice mindfulness we have to sit really still with our thoughts, and while that’s a fantastic way to do it, we can also meditate with other activities. The aim is to be present with our thoughts and empty our heads as much as possible. When drawing or painting specific activities, this can be a great way to shift focus, clear away thoughts and overall calm our breathing.

We offer classes that combine both activities

Each class starts with a guided meditation, followed by creating some art and finished with a reflective meditation. Every class is different in content and will be planned to work for the audience attending - whether that be a theme, interest or to work with the surroundings. Art ranges from sketching, to watercolour pencils to abstract creations.

Who is it for

Anyone interested in using art to help them be more mindful. Adults, teenagers, children and families. We’ve catered specifically for each age group and different demographics.

Who are we

Mindful Art was developed by secondary teacher Charlene McCallum and artist, Kayleigh McCallum. It was piloted successfully in St Ninian’s High School in Scotland and has been rolled out to other schools, private and corporate events. Previous clients include the National Museum of Scotland.

Mindfulness is one of the most important things you can do for your brain. It aids mental clarity, calms our nervous system and so much more. But sitting with a guided meditation isn’t the only way we can be mindful. There are so many different ways. Art is a great tool for this.

I first got into back into painting to help my mental health and so this is something close to my heart that I really believe works. So many people attend my workshops and say it’s been the most relaxing time of their week, they say they’ve got lost in their paintings or they’ve not thought about anything else in the past 2 hours. And I can’t tell you how happy for them I am.

I’ve created a short class that can help you unwind, be present and be mindful through creation. We’ll use a variety of materials and a variety of exercises that you can take home with you, to use in your everyday life.

Please note, I’m not a qualified mindfulness practitioner, I’ve simply learnt through experience what works within my art materials to clear our heads. I’ve taught similar classes in schools and for clients like the National Museum of Scotland.

You don’t have to be able to draw or paint to come along to this.

All materials are included in the workshop.
